In order to further stimulate the construction of “State key laboratory of Bioactive Substance and Function of Natural Medicines (SKLBSFNM)”, the startup meeting of SKLBSFNM has been held by Institute of Materia medica (IMM), Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) at Beijing Yishengyuan International Conference Center recently. Professor Xiaoliang Wang, the deputy director of the academic Committee of SKLBSFNM, chaired the meeting. The leaders from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Ministry of Health (MH), Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and the main technical backbone of the staff from SKLBSFNM attended the meeting.
Wenneng Zhou, the director of Base Foundation Division of MOST, and Guangxia Song, the director of Laboratory Department of Science and Education Division of the Ministry of Health both congratulated the meeting firstly, and then they put forward constructive suggestions on the construction, operation management and evaluation of State Key Laboratory (SKL). They specially pointed out that SKL is one of the brands of state innovation systems and SKL should always adhere to the policy of "Openness, Mobility, Alliance and Competition". They emphasized that the most important is “Openness” which would help the SKL improve academic level and establish a good academic atmosphere. They then addressed that SKL should organize a high level of research team insuring high levels of outputs, actively apply for major research projects of the state, and should take responsibilities to propose new research directions leading the development of natural medicine.
Professor Decheng Xu, the vice president of CAMS, congratulated the approval of the construction of SKLBSFNM by MOST of China. He pointed out that the senior generation of scientists had achieve a glorious achievement for IMM by their hard work which should pump the new generation of scientists to take the historical responsibilities to keep IMM as the top academy of drug development by taking harder efforts.
Xu reminded the leaders and research backbones of the laboratory should correctly judge the situation, keep heads clear, be prepared to respond to risks with the sense of responsibility, take the opportunity, and actively overcome challenge ahead to construct the SKL. He stressed that the SKL should mainly focus on the developments and basic researches related to innovative drugs. He said, "IMM has the power to construction the SKL, but has to break through the old mode, take the opportunity to try the innovation of management and operation mechanism, strengthen the cultural construction and to be one the best SKL."
Professor Yu, the academic committee director of SKL, reviewed the story of applying for SKL. He said, "We should not forget the contributions that senior scientists have done; we should take responsibility and do our best to run the SKL. As long as we adhere to the faith and responsibility, we will be able to obtain the major achievements as Artemisinin."
Professor Shishan Yu, the director of SKL, expressed his thanks to the leaders, scientists and researchers who supported the development and construction of the laboratory. He also reported the overall construction plan of the SKL. Professor Xiaoguang Chen, the vice director of state key laboratory, introduced the management regulations of SKL, including the managements of the reward, the management of independent projects, open research projects, academic ethics, animal ethics, laboratory safety and so on
Professor Jiandong Jiang, the director of IMM, also expressed his appreciations to the leaders and generations of scientists for their decades of supports and joint efforts. He stressed that SKL should be more in-depth development of cutting-edge research and make new contributions to solve the bottleneck of world's drug development. Professor Yu Liu, the party committee secretary, said "This meeting will effectively promote the construction of SKL". He emphasized that IMM will give full support including the talent introduction, operation funds, and laboratory space, to ensure the construction of SKL. He also put forward specific requirements on the construction of SKL. He believed that the construction of SKL would also promote the development of IMM.
In the meeting, the leaders from Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and Ministry of Health, announced the directors of SKL and its corresponding academic committee, and also issued letters of their appointments.
